Leonard, 85, a retired homesteader, died of a heart attack yesterday at 9:40 p.m. at the home of his son, Leo R. Beard, Asotin. He had suffered from a heart ailment for a year.
Leonard was born to Grace and Francis Beard on March 30, 1885, in Greenwood County, Mo.
In 1907 he moved west from Kentucky to Paradise, Ore., in 1889. After homesteading there for three years, the Beard family moved to Kansas and later back to Missouri.
He married the former Ida Varney on Sept. 23, 1905, in Columbus, Kansas. They moved to Louisville the same year and he worked in oil drilling until 1907 when they moved to Paradise, Ore.
After selling his farm he moved to Louisville, Ky., where he helped drill for oil during World War II.
Mrs. Beard died on June 25, 1962, at Asotin.
Beard married the former Anna Wilkins on Jan. 9, 1963, in Asotin.
Survivors include his wife at home; three daughters, Mrs. Georgia Estes, Joseph, Ore.; Mrs. George (Orpha) Reiman, Onalaska, Wash.; and Mrs. Roy (Mabel) Wamsley, Cinebar, Wash.; four sons, Frank M. Beard, Philomath, Ore.; Ralph E. Beard, Joseph, Ore.; Leo R. Beard, Caldwell, Ida.; five sisters, Mrs. Cecil Graves, Fort Knox Kentucky; Miss Halle Beard, Fort Myers, Fla.; Mrs. Iva White, Miami, Okla.; Mrs. Ora Bryan in southern Oregon; Mrs. Ruby Epperson, Missouri; 20 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild
