Barbara J. Clews, a Salem, Oregon resident for 18 years, died at the V.A. hospital in Vancouver on Tuesday , June 17th. Barb had been battling a rare form of cancer and was praised by her doctors for her spirit, determination and iron-clad faith. She was only 62.
Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Barb ventured first to the University of Pennsylvania before transferring to Baylor University, in Texas, to finish her BSN in Nursing. Barbara served as a Captain in the Army Nurse Corps. Most of her service was as an OB/GYN Nurse Clinician.
Barbara described herself as a "professional volunteer" and regardless of where the Army took her and her family, she found ways to serve her community. As a lifetime Girl Scout she had more than 50 years of service. She was a familiar face in her children's schools. She served her church in the choir, the nursery, the kitchen, with the youth groups, on mission trips, coordinating Women of Faith, educating youth and wherever else she felt she was needed.
In addition to her own service, Barbara was intensely involved in her children's and husband's activities and cultivated a strong, harmonious, and loving bond with all of them.
Barbara was a lover of all creatures, great and small. As a teenager she cared for the family's pet skunk but she was particularly attracted to cats, dogs and babies. She possessed a warm, captivating smile that could light up a room, as well as boundless compassion for other people. She had a sense of humor that responded well to the frolicsome banter of the family environment.
Barbara was proud of being a breast cancer survivor and went out of her way to provide support and an optimistic outlook to others who were diagnosed. She was cancer-free for more than 5 years. During her prolonged battle against histiocytic sarcoma, a very rare soft tissue cancer, she constantly knitted beautiful afghans which she gave to people as mementos of her affection and creativity. Barbara lived an abundant life that enhanced the lives of many people who knew her. She loved the Lord with all her heart, mind, and soul.

Barbara was the daughter of Annetta Marie (nee Rick) & James Butler Grim of Beaver, Pennsylvania. Both came from long lines of Pennsylvania dutch families. Barbara's grandmother, Annetta's mother, Mary Elizabeth Frances (nee Bithell) Rick, emigrated to the US from Stratford On Avon, England with her Welsh father and English mother as well as one brother.

Barbara is survived by her sister Phyllis of Mechanicsville, Virginia; her brother Byron James of DeMoines, Iowa; her husband Bill and son Carson of Salem, Oregon; her eldest daughter, Dawnine, resides in Taiwan, her daughter, Tara, and her husband Sky of Clark County, Washington.

I love you and miss you, Mom.
