About 1766, John married Rachel Steele, the daughter of Joseph Steele and Rachel (nee Putnam) Steele. An older John McMillen of New Boston married Mary Steele, a sister of Rachel Steele, and the two families are frequently confused in town histories. Additionally, many of the McMillen family dropped the "Mc" prefix about 1800, becoming just Millen.
John was a soldier of the Revolution, and was one of the men from New Boston who went to Rhode Island in her defense. He also was one of John Stark's New Hampshire soldiers who fought at the Battle of Saratoga in New York.
John and Rachel had 12 children: Samuel (who married Mary Polly Phelps), Mary (who married her cousin James McMillen, son of the older John McMillen), Alexander (who married Hannah Bailey), Sarah "Sally" (who married her cousin James Steele), Henry, Daniel (who married Polly Austin), John Stark, Nancy, Joseph (who married Abigail Gordon), Hannah (who married Zenas Whiting), Rachel (who married Lyman Hoskins), and Catherine Marrine (who married Samuel Pike).
