Charles first married Mary "Mae" Boyes who died in 1894 in Leland Twp., Leelanau, Michigan.

He then married Emma on May 19, 1896 in Northport, Leelanau, Michigan. Emma is the mother of all of the children

Next to the lumber Company's house, Charles Tilley built himself a home, the first of many he was to build on the island. He and Noe Stebbins had a mill on the beach before the company came. Tilley homesteaded the land to the north, building himself another home in order to live on his homstead.

John McCann's grand house was built by Charles Tilley as well as both McCann's and Yankee Jim's store, Anthony Malloy's meat market and many other buildings."
