Capt. John Melvin Dorn is the son of Wright Peter Dorn of Edgefield District SC, who married Sarah (Sallie) OUZTS, the sixth child of Nancy FARRINGTON and Henry Ouzts, Sr.

Henry Ouzts, Sr. is the patriarch of the Henry Ouzts Line, and the third child of Elizabeth HARLING and George Peter Utz (now Ouzts) of Hoffenheim Germany and the Edgefield District SC.

Capt. John Melvin Dorn left Edgefield to make his fortune in AL and later in the Loraine and Colorado City area of Mitchell County, TX. He married Talvia Ann (Talva)McCRELESS on 29 April 1871 in the Mount Hilliard area of Bullock County, AL. They had eleven of their 13 children there before leaving AL for Falls County, TX and then Mitchell County, TX. Their children are: Nancy Addrene, Hannah Pauline, Arthur Ansley (Bud), Sarah LeeAnn, James Wright, John Marvin, Anna Josephine (Josie), Una Palestine, Lois Delila (Lila), Emma and Ida - twins, Lottie Eulala (Lala), and Melvin Pierce.

Capt. John Melvin Dorn founded the Dorn Chapel Methodist Church and Cemetery where many of the family are buried.
