William H. Tomlinson was born about 1829 in North Carolina. No information was found on his lineage, but it is known he was in Clayton, Johnston County, NC, in the 1850's where he was a retail merchant and may be related to the Tomlinson families of Wayne County, NC.

In about 1853, he married Martha Ellington, the 16-year old daughter of Rev. John F. Ellington and Christianna Avery. The couple would have two known children:

* Victor B. Tomlinson (1854-1886)
* Elnora Theodosia Tomlinson (1859-1860)

William H. Tomlinson died at age 32 on Jul 26, 1861, of Typhoid Fever.

In 1866, his then 29-year old widow married (2nd) to Rev. James McDaniel White who became stepfather to her only surviving child. Rev. and Mrs. White would have two sons together before her death in 1885. Rev. White would marry again in 1888, but no further children were born.
