A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Adams County October 16, 1862, as a substitute for Jacob K. Oyler, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 7 as a private with Co. I, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably 28 Jul 1863.
In 1880, he is living in Alto Dale, Franklin, PA
