Mrs. Jessie Gatley Rites
Mrs. Jessie Pearl Gatley, 83-year old wife of Dr. P.F. Gatley, passed away at their home in Louisburg, early Sunday morning, December 27, 1964, after an illness of four years. She had been completely helpless 2 1/2 years following a stroke.
Jessie Pearl, daughter of Perry and Mary Maupin, was born Sept. 4, 1881, at Denver, Mo., in Harrison County. She attended grade school and normal school there, then graduated from the Kirksville State Teacher's College and taught school eight years in her home county. On October 28, 1906, she was united I marriage to Dr. P.F. Gatley at Eagleville, Mo., and they came to Bucyrus, Kans., where the young doctor was practicing. In December, 1907 they moved to Louisburg, which has been their home ever since, and when they observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1956 the people of this area had an appreciation day and presented each a golden watch. They became the parents of one daughter, Thelma, who grew up and attended schools here, later teaching in the Louisburg Elementary School.
As a young doctor's wife in a small community, Mrs. Gatley soon came to know and be interested in her husband's patients and their families, helping in many ways in those early days, and this interest in his profession never waned as long as her health permitted, many long hours she has served as office girl and nurse. She also did much work for the Red Cross during World War I. However, her home and her church were her greatest concern and joy, but her keen intellectual mind would not let her rest from her interest in books and poetry. As long as 50 years ago, she opened her home as a center for a travelling library and she was a charter member of the Home Study Club. She was a member of the Louisburg Christian church and served in many capacities during her active church life.
She is survived by her husband of the home; their one daughter, Thelma Gatley, a counselor in the South High School in Wichita; one sister, Mrs. C. L. Terry of Kirkville, Mo.; one half-sister, Mrs. Jack MacLean of Columbus, Mont., other relatives, many friends and acquaintances.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday (today) at the Louisburg Christian Church with Rev. Arlyn Clary officiating. Mrs. Herbert Martin accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Raines, who sang "Going Down the Valley" and "Beyond the Sunset." The pallbearers were Dr. Floyd Grimes of Paola and Glenn Towne, E.V. Perdue, G.W. McElheny, Roy Masterson, Vernon White, Walter Zumbrunnen and Otto Scherlinger. Burial was in the Louisburg cemetery.
In keeping with Mrs. Gatley's deep interest in books, the family requested no flowers and that contributions be made to the Louisburg Community Library book fund, which is set up and will be handled at the Bank of Louisburg. Later it has been suggested a Jessie Gatley Memorial shelf be added at the library for gift books in her memory.
