Civil War Union Army Officer. He was mustered in as a 1st Lieutenant in Company B, 3rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Heavy Artillery on February 28, 1862. Promoted to Captain and commander on August 28, 1864, he served through the end of the war, and was honorably discharged on July 11, 1865.

On September 29, 1892 his wife, Clara L. Grill, filed for a United States Army Pension (Application #560380, Certificate #399646).
