The years of his childhood he spent in his home country where he also was united in marriage with Frederika Scheel from Pothagen, in 1873. This union was blessed with eight children, six sons, and two daughters, of which all but one son, who died at the age of 39, survive.
In 1882, he came to America with his family and at first resided in Clayton County near Monona, Iowa. He then moved to Bremer County, and the family has lived in this community ever since. He was affiliated with St. John's Lutheran Church since 1897.
In 1899 he retired from farming and moved to Sumner. His helpmate and life's companion was taken in death in 1919. Since then he has lived with his daughter, Mrs. Henry Stahr, at Eldorado, Iowa, where on the 30th of January he peacefully departed this life as we trust in the Lord. His age is 79 years, 6 months, and 10 days. The bereaved mourners are his children, five sons, two daughters, one brother, two step-sisters, 32 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and many friends. May he rest in peace.
