Husband of (1) Abigail McDonald, married September 30, 1858, (on his near right) & (2) to widow Martha Jane (nee McKay) Covington, married February 4, 1892, (on his left).

Father of 8 children with Abigail: Cornelia Ann Terry Baxley, Gustave B. Terry, Henrietta Terry McKay, Emma Jane Terry, James L. Terry, Mary Catherine Terry McLeod, Cora Lee Terry and Winfield Scott Terry Sr.

Father of at least one son, Thomas Terry (1855-1935) and a daughter Margaret "Maggie" Terry (1858-1943), with enslaved woman Hannah Terry. Note: Tom's year of birth is incorrectly shown on his tombstone as 1860.

Elisha was a farmer. He served for a short period as a Confederate postmaster during the American Civil War. In August 1865, he applied for and received a Presidential pardon for said service to the Confederacy.

The 1899 obituary of his daughter Cora notes that he was County Commissioner.

It is unknown what the middle initial "C" represents. Some speculate that it is Clay, Champ, Champness, Claud or Clyde but a document has yet to surface that proves its meaning.

It is pertinent to note that there was a second man in Richmond County with almost the same name who lived in the same timeframe. Many researchers confuse the two. They were 2nd cousins.

Here is how to distinguish between them:

The Elisha C. Terry (1834-1911) of this memorial was a farmer and landowner, as well as the Postmaster of Bear Branch Post Office. He lived northeast of Rockingham in Roberdell (on the north side of Hitchcock's Creek) and is seen in property records as E.C. Terry with wives Abigail and Jane. He was commonly known as Elisha Terry.

The other man is Elisha Champ Terry (1843-1914), who served as Postmaster of Hamlet in the Marks Creek Township, which is located southeast of Rockingham. He was commonly called Champ Terry and is seen in property records as Champ Terry with wives Emily (or Amelia) and Ellen.
