Captured at Murfreesboro, Tennessee on 31 December 1862 during the Battle of Stone's River, he was incarcerated at the notorious Camp Douglas, Illinois. His health deteriorated during his imprisonment and he was paroled to hospital in Petersburg, Virginia.
He died in Biloxi Mississippi at Beauvoir, the home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Beauvoir, in later years, was a home for Confederate veterans and their families.
James married Tennessee Cockerham on 20 January 1881 in Hinds County, Mississippi. They were the parents of three known daughters Ada, Stella and Minnie (Robert Napier).
