Mrs. Sylvia Norris Gamel, 89, of Smyrna, formerly of Rockmart passed away on Monday, June 16, 2008. Mrs. Gamel was born and raised in Rockmart and was the daughter of the late Julius T. Norris and the late Alma Marks Norris. In 1952 she moved to Smyrna. She was employed by Lockheed for over 28 years before retiring. Mrs. Gamel played the piano for many gospel groups throughout the Southeast. She was a member of the Smyrna First Baptist Church. Mrs. Gamel was preceded in death by two sons, Winfred Gamel and Terry Gamel; one brother, Ralph Norris; and two sisters, Velma Pruitt and Wilma Coats. Survivors include her husband, Charles S. Gamel of Smyrna; a son, Fred Gamel of Acworth; a daughter, Janice Tucker of Marietta; four brothers, Amos Norris of Statesville, N.C., Alton Norris of Rockmart, W. A. Norris of Douglasville and Dale Norris of Jacksonville Fla.; and two sisters, Imogene Moon and Glenda Taylor both of Rockmart. Five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mrs. Gamel were held Friday, June 20, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Carmichael Funeral Home of Smyrna with Dr. Steve Kimmel officiating. Interment followed in the family lot of the County Line Cemetery in Rockmart. Carmichael Funeral Home of Smyrna had charge of the funeral arrangements.
