William Meikle (b. 1831)

Meikle, William, farmer, Section 10 (Jefferson township); PO Oelwein; born in Lanarkshire, Scottland, June 5, 1831; he located in Trumble Co., Ohio with his father in 1844; in Grant Co, Wisconsin, in 1851; California in 1852; and returned to Wisconsin in 1854; he located in this county in 1857. He married Miss Lucinda Allan January 20, 1851; she was born Trumbull Co., Ohio, in 1833; they have eight children --- Mary L., born January 3, 1854; Adeline R., born March 11, 1855; William C., born June 28, 1860; Emma L., born September 4, 1863; Minnie J., born August 14, 1866; Margaret A., born August 28, 1868; Clara E., born June 20, 1873; James E., born April 4, 1876. Mr. Meikle owns 231 acres of land, worth $30 per acre. He has good improvements.

Inscription: William Meikle was born in Kirkmuirhill, Lesmahagow, Lanark, Scotland the son of Thomas Meikle I and Mary Barr. They came to America in 1844 to Trumbull Co., Ohio. William and his brother John bought a wagon and several oxen and cows. They went to California at the time of the gold rush in 1850. $30,000 was taken from the Sacramento River by John and William with a pole that had a ball of blue clay on the end.
He and John then went to Grant Co., Wisconsin, this is where he meet and married his wife Lucinda Allen January 20, 1851, Ellenboro, Grant Co., Wisconsin, they had one child there Mary L. Meikle wife of Harrison Butler. They then went to Oelwein, Fayette County, Iowa and increased their family by 9 more. Adeline R. Meikle wife of Joseph Butler, Lester Meikle who died in infancy in 1859 in Oelwein,Fayette, Iowa, William C. Meikle married Sarah Catherine Harper, Emma Lillie Meikle wife of Charles A. Miner, Nettie Meikle, Minnie J. Meikle,Margaret Alice Meikle wife of Thomas Edward Meskell, Clara E. Meikle wife of Sidney Lee Schneider, and James Elmer Meikle married Hattie Heath.

OBITUARY
Died: March 1, 1885, William Meikle of gastroenteritis in the 54 year of his age.
Mr. Meikle was one of Jefferson Townships most respected citizens. He left a wife
and seven children to mourn his loss. One daughter passed over the river before him.
Daughter and father meet on the bright celestial shore never more to part. The funeral
services were conducted by Rev. L. Ellingwood, at the F. B. Church, in the midst of a large
audience of sympathetic friends.
