Wiley J. Marquis Dies
at Home in Houston

Wiley J. Marquis, life-long resident of the Pleasant Hill community, died last Monday evening at his home, 7405 El Paso St., Houston.
Mr. Marquis was born July 26, 1856 in the State of Alabama. At the Age of ten he moved with his parents to the Pleasant Hill community where he resided until a few months ago when he moved to Houston to make his home in that city.
On November 23, 1877, Mr. Marquis was married to Miss Fannie Miller. To this union was born four daughters and three sons. One daughter, Mrs. Iva Richardson preceded him in death. His survivors are as follows: Wife, Mrs. Fannie Marquis; three daughters; Mrs. Conley Moseley, Pleasant Hill; Mrs. James Brenham, Houston; Mrs. Wayne Stiles, Alvin; three sons: L. H. Marquis, Cuero; V. E. Marquis, Houston and W. F. Marquis, Austin; one brother, Ellis Marquis of Taylor; twenty six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchilren.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon in the Pleasant Hill Methodist church by Rev. P. T. Ramsey, pastor First Methodist church, Rockdale and Rev. Elvie S. Taylor, pastor Lawndale Ave. Baptist church, Houston.
Mr. Marquis will be remembered as a pioneer, friend and neighbor of the Pleasant Hill community. He took an active part in the social, civic and religious affairs of the community and maintained an interest in the growth and development of the community until the time of his death. He was a kind, generous husband and father providing well for his household and giving liberally to all worthy causes. His last words were of praise to his faithful companion who has walked by his side for more than sixty three years. Placing his arms around her neck his last staqtement was "You are the sweetest thing in all the world."
