His married Alveta Clanton on April 1 1943, his wife of 62 years at the time of his death. He is the father of Sue Steen, John Stanley "Sonny" Szitar, Brenda Cook, Teddy Joe Szitar, Debra E Blalock, and Sherry Neal.
