Virgil was the only child of Perry and Marian (Smith) Nebergall. His parents divorced shortly after their marriage, and Virgil and his mother lived with her mother Essie (Casteel) Smith Berry and her second husband, George L. "Roy" Berry in Roodhouse, Greene County, Illinois. Later, his mother moved to Belleville, Illinois, and Virgil lived with the Berrys. His grandmother died in 1960, but he continued to live with Roy the rest of his life.

He graduated from Roodhouse High School in 1962. He played clarinet in the school's band, and was known for his cheery good humor.

He died as a result of an automobile wreck on the way home from the first football game for the newly-consolidated North Greene school district. The game was played at Northwestern High School in Palmyra. The car he was riding in was speeding and the driver lost control in the loose gravel of the freshly-oiled road. Virgil and his friends Darwin "Dobsy" Chapman and Henry "Hank" Hannaford were all thrown out of the vehicle when it rolled. All three died.
