Samuel Stacy was a farmer in Spartanburg District (later Cherokee County), South Carolina.

He enlisted as a Private in the 18th South Carolina Infantry on March 26, 1862. He became First Sergeant of Company K of the 18th South Carolina and was wounded and captured at the Battle of Saylor's Creek on April 6, 1865, just a few days before the surrender at Appamattox. He signed the Oath of Allegiance on June 10, 1865 and returned home to raise his family.

The regiment saw extensive combat at Malvern Hill, Second Manassas, Sharpsburg (Antietam), and most notably at the Battle of the Crater during the siege of Petersburg.
