Four Miners Lose Lives In Harlan County Blast
By the Associated Press

While crack first aid teams of Kentucky coal mine companies toiled with theoretical problems at Lexington yesterday in their annual contest, miles away in Harlan County rescue squads tried unsuccessfully to save four men trapped by a mine explosion.

The men were trapped and killed three miles underground in the Black Star Coal Corporation's mine at Alva.

Four Men Are Missing

Mine officials said they were unable to determine immediately whether an explosion, a fire or a slate fall trapped the men.

Albert B. Hill, vice president of the corporation, said rescue workers found the bodies of the men at 10:15 p.m.

The victims were John Lee, mine foreman; Luther Thompson, assistant foreman; Dewey Proffit, coal loader, and Clifford Fore, day shirt worker.

The men were reported to have entered the mine about noon to investigate unexplained "trouble." Fellow workers had reported hearing a noise in the mine.

Rescue squads were sent into the mine when the four failed to return in due time.
