Jake, of Pine Forest, passed away after a long illness at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital.

In 1943, at age 17, He left Beaumont High to volunteer in the U.S. Marine Air Corps. He flew with the VMSB-244 Bombing Banshees Scout- Bomber Squadron, engaging in combat through out the Pacific Islands of Boganville, where their fighter cover was provided by Pappy Boyington's Black Sheep squadron, at Renaul in the Solomons, and in the Philippines. He was the tail-gunner on a two-seater Douglas SBD Dauntless Scout-Bomber. Firing rear-facing twin .30 caliber piston-grip machine guns, he flew 156 combat missions.

He retired from Southwestern Bell where he worked as a repairman for over 30 years.

On November 11, 2001, at a Veteran's Day ceremony at River Front Park in Beaumont, Jake was presented his High school diploma, dated 1943, by Beaumont Independent School District and the State of Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents Jacob Madison Shorty and Mary Roselie Peveto Courmier.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years Melba Courmier, sons David Lamberth and Paul Courmier, Sr., daughter Donna Price, five grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
