--James Omar Cole, of Peru, yesterday celebrated his ninetieth birthday. He appears to be little older than a man in the seventies, having none of the mental or bodily weaknesses of age, and being able to walk over long distances and care for many of his business interests as well as he did when a younger man.
--Mr. Cole was born Dec. 23, 1828, at Zanesville, Ohio, and came to Indiana when five years old with his parents, stopping first at Goshen and coming to Miamisport in 1834, the village that later became Peru. For many years he has been one of the most influential business men in the state. He has accumulated a fortune.

--James Omer Cole, 94 years old, multimillionaire resident of Peru, died at his home Saturday night after being bedfast three weeks. Complications resulting from his feefled condition caused his death. The widow, one daughters, Mrs. Samuel F. Porter; one sister, Mrs. Ellen Fetters; five grandchildren, James Omer Cole Jr, Louis Cole, Samuel Cole, Mrs. Florence McCaffrey and Cole Porter and several great-grandchildren survive.
--When the town of Peru was a village the Cole family located here and in 1849 Mr. Cole, with others from this section, went to California in search of wealth. Six years later Mr. Cole came back and bought George Rettig's brewery which property is still a part of his estate. Later Mr. Cole and Clinton Crane formed a partnership and became extensively interested in coal and timber in West Virginia, their holdings in that state totaling many thousands of acres of profitable mines and mills. In Miami county Mr. Cole confined his investments principally to farms, but he owned an ice plant and considerable stock in the First national bank, of which institution he was first vice president. Recently he deeded Hartwell ranch of 4,000 acres located near Jacksonville, Ill., valued at nearly $1,000,000, to his first grandson, James Omer Cole Jr., a son of the late Louis Cole, whose widow resides in Peru.
