Edith Brown (Cockrell) Long Blitch, 85, of Pensacola, Florida passed away on Saturday, April 21, 2001 in Kenner, Louisiana.
Mrs. Blitch was born in Daleville, Mississippi on September 30, 1915 and was the daughter of the late George Bell Cockrell and Myrtle Brown Ford. She was a longtime resident of Hattiesburg, Mississippi prior to moving to Pensacola, Florida in 1972.
She was known for her commitment to family, spending her life as a devoted housewife and mother. She was an avid bridge player, gardener, and creator of beautiful needlework. She was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church of Hattiesburg. She embodied a love that will be remembered by all.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, John H. Long, Jr. in 1964 and Arthur W. Blitch in 1997; sister, Mary George Cockrell and brother, William Stephens Cockrell.
She is survived by her five children: Mrs. Jeanette L. Massengale of Pensacola, Florida; John A. ‘Buster' Long and his wife Ginger of Valrico, Florida; Mayor G. Richard Long and his wife Susan of Jackson, Alabama; Mrs. Carol L. Kirke of Kenner, Louisiana; Dr. J. Michael Long and his wife Tina of South Bend, Indiana; two step children, Stephen B. Blitch and his wife Brenda of Mobile, Alabama; and Claudia B. Edmondson and her husband Ed of Eden, Utah; thirteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; six step- grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2001 at Highland Cemetery, Hattiesburg, Mississippi with Reverend David Price of Main Street United Methodist Church officiating. Hulelt-Winstead is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark United Methodist Church.
