Joab H. Wooster is said to have been the first white child (non Native American) born in Java. At twelve years of age he left home and was for two years employed by William Coughran of Attica, in making spinning wheels. There, he learned the carpenter's and millwright's trade. Engaged exclusively in millwrighting all of his life, his profession was enhanced by his reputation for excellent workmanship, and took him all over the countryside, erecting some of the most important mills in this section of the state. In 1867 he was granted a patent on his invention of a shaft governor.

Joab outlived four wives, the fifth, Kate Felt who he married when he was 74, outlived him.

He lived in the center of Strykersville and was for many years, a deacon at the Strykersville Baptist Church.
