Jasper Hawkins
Jasper Newton Hawkins was born June 4th, 1843 in Jefferson Co., Illinois and died at the home of his son, Harry Hawkins, at Raymond, Sept. 17, 1924, aged 81 years, 3 months, 13 days.
He was united in marriage to Sarah Jane Claybourn of Illinois July 4, 1867. She preceded him in death Jan. 27, 1913.
To this union were born seven children, one of whom died in infancy. These survive him: Ina Herbold, Great Bend; Ira Hawkins, Jetmore; Otto Buck Hawkins, Pueblo, Colo.; Ala Heninger, Oklahoma City, Okla.; Harry Hawkins, Raymond, and Elsie Williamson, Crowley, Colo. Besides the children he leaves 32 grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren and two brothers.
He enlisted in the Civil War, Aug. 3, 1861 at Knoll Prairie, in Co. F. 30th Vol Inf. and served for three years. He re enlisted as a veteran and was wounded near the close of the war, receiving his discharge Jan. 25, 1865.
He came to Kansas in 1865, filing a claim in Haskell county. In 1894 he moved to Raymond and has since resided here. He was a Mason, the Alden Lodge to which he belonged conducted the services at the cemetery.
"Grandpa Hawkins" as he was generally known, was a man of Sterling worth and Christian character, especially beloved by the school children, his home, with its well kept shady yard adjoined the school house.
