Herman Peter DuPont went to be with our Lord July 14, 2008, after a long battle with Alzheimer's. We bid farewell to a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Born and raised in Louisiana April 13, 1931, Herman proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1951 until 1971. He served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars earning numerous commendations and battle awards. After a long and honorable career in the Marine Corps he worked for Hydraulic Services Inc. in Portsmouth until his retirement in 1995. Dad was an asset to the Tidewater Council by being an outstanding Boy Scouts of America leader, helping numerous scouts and his own son earn the highest rank in scouting, Eagle.
Herman is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Mary Daphne DuPont and their three children, Cindy D. DeLucenay and her husband Keith, Brenda L. Sheridan and her husband Brian and Christopher M. DuPont and Mickey Ferreira. Affectionately known as PaPa, he was blessed with three wonderful grandchildren, Adam, Bridgette and Craig. As the baby of 10 children to Clovise and Florentine DuPont, he left to cherish his memory his lone sibling, James DuPont.
He was a devoted supporter of his grandchildren juggling his time between Boy Scout events, baseball games, band concerts and theatre performances. PaPa will be greatly missed.
A celebration Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Norfolk with Father Beeman officiating. Interment with full honors by the U.S. Marine Corps honor guard will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service at the church Friday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association. Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., is handling the arrangements. Semper Fi.
