Solemn funeral rites were held at St. Joseph's Church, Pierz, Tuesday, at 10 for George Merkling, 68, who passed away at his home in Pierz at 5:45 p.m., Saturday, after a four-month illness due to lung cancer. Military manner in which the rites were conducted was under direction of the American Legion Post, Pierz, No. 341, of which Mr. Merkling was a member, having been wounded in World War I. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Celebrant of the Solemn Requiem was Rev. Robert Voigt, with Rev. Robert Shulzetenberg and Rev. Richard Leisen assisting as deacon and subdeacon, respectively. Interment was in St. Joseph's cemetery, Pierz.
Pallbearers were Elmer Bayerl, Rod Preimesberger, Art Preimesberger, Tony Happke, Ervin Brausen, and Richard Maurer.
Honorary pallbearers were R. M. Stoll, Casper Thommes, Fred Dahmen, Wm. Gohl, Herman Poepping, and Matt Beimert.
He was born at St. Michael, April 6, 1890 and married Agnes Schmidtz at Cold Spring. They lived in Pierz the past 40 years.
Besides his wife, the following sons and daughters survive: Clarence, Pierz; Irvin, St. Paul; Mrs. Isidore Tillges (Genevieve), St. Paul; Mrs. Ronald Flicker (Dorothy), Somerset, Wisconsin; and Mrs. Carl Gross (Lorraine), Little Falls. Also surviving is his mother, Mrs. Otilia Merkling, 93, Osseo; and the following brothers and sisters: Frank, Pierz; Dominick, Waukegan, Illinois; Leo, Pierz; Jacob, Jr., Onamia; William, Minneapolis; Danny, Washington, Mrs. Henry Preimesberger, Pierz; Mrs. Herman Block, Onamia; Mrs. Harry Krueger, Davenport, Ia.; Mrs. John Otton, Osseo; and Mrs. Frank Gelhar, Waukegan, Illinois.
