Originally, the Bennetts arrived in the Mesilla Valley in the 1860s with the California Column. D. Robert Bennett was born in Mexico City on September 16,1922, where his father Delmar Casad Bennett was employed. Later, the family returned to Las Cruces where Robert and his brother, William Casad Bennett, grew up on the family farms in the valley with their mother, Sadie Harlan, and her sisters Annette and Olga, Willie, and Harlan.
At 18, Robert joined the Army Air Corps in 1941 at the beginning of WWII. He flew the 'hump' between China, Burma and India over the Himalayan Mountains. His service was honored with the Air Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross from the United States and the Republic of China.
After the war Robert graduated from UC Berkeley and the Medical College of Virginia with honors. He served his internships at Tripler Army Hospital in Hawaii, then opened his first practice in San Francisco where he became Medical Director of the Episcopal Home and San Francisco General Hospital. He served as an army physician at the Presidio during the Vietnam War.
Robert met his wife Ruth while in San Francisco. They married and had a daughter, Christina Louise. In 1973 the family moved to Las Cruces where the family lived for the next thirty years. Robert opened a practice and for many years served as physician for the City of Las Cruces, Raytheon, EBID and WSMR.
An excellent pilot, Robert maintained his love of flying over the years traveling to visit family and friends and often flew to small towns in the region to provide medical care. He also loved to read and could be found most of the time with the morning paper, medical journal or spy novel. He enjoyed catching up with friends by phone or written notes. Many of his long time patients were also his lifelong friends and he cared very much for them.
Robert was a devoted husband of forty years and loving father. He is deeply missed by those who knew and loved him. He was survived by his wife, Ruth Ann Bennett, daughter, Christina Louise Bennett-Stamper, son-in-law, Trevor Stamper, granddaughter Caitlin Elizabeth Dawn Stamper, sister-in-law, Judith Bennett, his nieces and nephews and cousins Albert,Tito, and Sigal. Jari Grimm, Tod Bennett, Joe Bennett, Charles (Mac) Scott, Steve Scott and William Harlan.
