The 1870 Census for Dry Creek, Howell County, Missouri, shows Travis at 16 years old, living with his mother Emaline and father Travis I and a farm laborer. It gives his place of birth as Illinois. Travis was raised in a religious family. He was able to quote excerpts from the Bible that helped him win many law cases for his clients. Travis married Mary Green about 1871 in Missouri. They had four children, Travis III, Ryle, Lady Clara, and Amanda Ann.

In 1871 Travis and Mary bought land, through the Homestead Act of May 20, 1862, at the 5th Principal Meridian, Range 10-W, Township 25-N in Howell County Missouri. It lists John Taylor (Travis II brother) as witness to the final proof dated 1 Sept 1877.

A letter from the West Plains Public Library says John and Travis (brothers) were early homesteaders to Willow Springs area. A newspaper article from Willow Springs states Travis was cowhided for his womanizing. A newspaper article printed in a Mountain Grove Newspaper explains about Travis' killing. It is estimated his death date as 3 Oct 1902. Willow Springs information supports that he was shot and killed as he entered a saloon going after the brother, Chicken Bill Featheringill, of a woman he was messing around with while still married to Mary Green. Even with his womanizing problem, he would not tolerate cruality to children. Travis took in and raised Florence Hanabrink. The 1910 Census from Beggs, OK, shows daughter Lady Clara Taylor Morris. She states Travis Taylor was born in Kentucky.
