John J. Horton was 26, and living in Knoxville, Marion Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. F of the 40th Iowa Infantry on Aug 9, 1862. He was mustered into federal service on Sept 29, 1862. He mustered out of the service on Aug 2, 1865, at Ft. Gibson, Cherokee Nation (OK today).

He applied for his federal pension on June 13, 1879. His application is #291,949, and his certificate #188,405.

John J. Horton enlisted with three others who were likely his brothers as they all enlisted on the same day, and into the same company: George W. Horton (#22919126), who died of disease March 8, 1863, and is buried in the Mound City National Cemetery, Illinois; James A. Horton (#94471171), who died of disease on April 6, 1864, and is buried in the Little Rock National Cemetery; and Timothy M. Horton, who was also mustered out on Aug 2, 1865, at Ft. Gibson, Cherokee Nation.
