Nellie grew up on her family farm near Bridgeport. She attended School at the Bridgeport Schools graduating in 1930.
On November 18, 1931, She Married Clifford Smith and they began farming near Mansfield, WA.
Nellie is of the generation that came of age at the beginning of the depression. Her generation survived and prospered with little to work with other than determination and grit. She leaves us all with a legacy to model our lives on.
Nellie loved to play the piano and would entertain her family and friends with polkas, waltz, country songs, and hymns.
Nellie loved to cook and for many years would supply decorated cakes for weddings and other events in and around the community of Mansfield.
Nellie is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Verle & Joanne Smith of Bridgeport; grandchildren, Roland Smith of Bridgeport, Claudette (Stuart) McAllister of Paulina, OR, and Danelle (James) Wallace of Richland, WA; great-grandchildren Kayla and Dylan Rice. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Carol Smith; grandson, Duane (Sharon) Smith, and great-grandson, Connor all of Mansfield; granddaughter Deanna (Jeff) Wagner and great-grandchildren Chelsea, Jarod, and Grant of Reardan, WA.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by son, Keith Smith; husband, Clifford Smith; five brothers, A.A., John, Bill, Roy, and Harold Asmussen, and sisters Hazel Henton and Lela McKee.
