A Tribute to the Memory of Miss Jennie Noah

Oldest daughter of Lucian B., and Cassandra Noah, who departed this life,

April 24th, 1881, aged 21 years, 11 months and 1 day. ( Birth calculated to be 25 March 1903 )

Dear Jennie, after a life of good health, and enjoying and fulfilling all the requirements necessary, as a dutiful daughter, a loving sister, and a true friend, and ornament of the highest order of society, and of the highest order of friendship which requires no sacrifices on the part of her many friends, both old and young, which enabled her to always hold friends and make no enemies. She was suddenly seized with deadly disease, congestion of the brain, which baffled the skills of our best physicians, and in one short week was called away. The great anxiety of her good neighbors as well as the solicitude manifested by them, when they called to see her, and her plaintive wail, caused then to go away in tears, exemplifies more than my pen can describe the high esteem of which she was held by all who knew her.

Although it lacerates our hearts, at her loss, we bow submissively to the mandates of that great and good being, who brought us into the world and shapes our destinies, and, and doeth all things well.

Dear Jennie died in the morning of life, while the shadows were falling far to the west, being weary by the wayside, lay down, using her burden for a pillow, fell into that dreamless sleep, to which to mortal eyes knows no wakening, while yet in love with life and enraptured with the world, she passes to silence pathetic dust. It may be for the best just in the happiest, sunniest hour of the voyage of life, while eager winds are expanding every sail, to dash against that unseen rock an I in an instant hear the billows roar above a sunken ship. For whether in mid-sea or among the breakers of the farther shore, a wreck at last must mark the end of each and all. Every life, no matter if its every hour is rich of love and every moment jeweled with a joy, will, at its close become a tragedy as sad and deep and dark as can be woven of the warp and woof of mystery and death.

She added to the sum of human joy, and everyone for whom she did some loving service and who gained her esteem, would bring a blossom to her grave she would rest beneath a storm of flowers.

Although, through her most trying times, in life and death, all that is left dear to us and her sympathizing friends, is to emulate her many virtues and live with our fellow morals as one great universal family, created by that great and good being, who rules the destinies of the world without fear or favor, doubt or dogma, rules the world from the great beginning in the end, and rules all things well.

Quite a number of her young friends watched through the stillness of the night with the remains, with great respect, and the quietness of death. The beautiful wreath of flowers and a rose furnished by an unknown friend, example flies those rare and unselfish motives, almost unknown to the world. Well may it be said, the record of generous life runs like a vine around the memory of our dead and every sweet and unselfish act is at its close a perfumed flower.
