Susan Stanley, daughter of James Smith Stanley and Sarah Ann (Feigley) Stanley was born at Canaan, Marion County, Ohio on February 8, 1833. Susan married George Archer Baker in Rock Island, Rock Island County, Illinois on July 4, 1849. During Susan's lifetime she moved many times with her husband. They had 13 children.

The North Dakota State University has a short biography about Susan Baker. It is part of their Pioneer Mother Project Records. The biography states "Susan Baker was a very ambitious woman, a good thinker and could make a dollar do its duty."

According to Susan's death certificate she had been in Great Falls, Montana for 3 weeks living with family. Her previous residence since the mid 1890's was Stuart, Guthrie County, Iowa.
