According to a note written by his granddaughter, Manda Jane Luttrell Hall:
"W. H. H. Skaggs served in Reg. M 17th Ky Cavalry Co. G during the Civil War. His commanding officers were: Captain John H. Sturdivant, Major John T. Tyler, Colonel Samuel F. Johnson"

Harrison was a lover of horses and kept a fine horse to ride until a few years before his death.
He was illiterate but he was a fine fiddle player.
