Manning volunteered to fight in the Civil War and participated in the 7 days battles according to county records. His health was very poor and he was eventually released from service for "inability to perform the duties of a soldier" at Richmond, Va., June 23, 1862. A friend stated at a Civil War veterans pension hearing that although too sick to fight, when Manning came home he made shoes for the soldiers. Also stated at a later hearing was that he had spent the rest of any assets he had to pay for his wife's funeral and for his and hers doctors bills. He could not write- which was not uncommon for the times and signed his mark with an "X".I have not been able to verify his death or burial. Last knowledge of him being alive was at a pension hearing in 1907- he does not appear on the 1910 GA. census.
