Don Chapman, 69, was born Feburary 2, 1939, in Portales to Zell and Allen Chapman and died July 7, 2008, in Lubbock, TX. His earliest years were lived in the Causey community. At the age of 9, he and his family moved to the Dora area where he attended school from the 6th grade, and graduated from Dora High School in 1956. He went on to attend two years at Eastern New Mexico University before transferring to New Mexico State University where he studied another three years in Electrical Engineering.
On June 7, 1959, in Grady, NM, he was married to Elaine Lovvorn. The couple later divorced. His first job was with Martin-Marietta, an aerospace company in Denver. In 1965, he moved his family to Hereford, TX. where he was employed as an engineer for Holly Sugar Co. In January 1977, the family moved to LaVeta, CO., where he went into business for himself manufacturing candles and pinecone fireplace starters among other items. He eventually became involved in numerous business ventures, including marketing baskets of Colorado grown foods, and a fishing lake where you were guaranteed to catch two fish, which were then cleaned and cooked for you to enjoy a fresh caught meal. He owned land on which cattle were pastured, as well as other land where you could pay to hunt.
Shortly after the death of his father in 1996, Don relocated to Portales to help his mother run the family farms. He was at his mother's home twice daily?once to open the mail and another time to check on her and usually play dominoes. Since Mr. Chapman moved to Portales, he had been deeply involved in the local Little League program, and was known as their #1 supporter. He was an avid Denver Broncos fan and loved sports of all kinds. He was a regular atPortales Rams games as well as university sporting events. He loved traveling, and had hoped to go to England one day. He also had plans to attend the International Little League Tournament in Pennsylvania later this summer. Don was a people person, and would help anyone he could in whatever way he had available. In both high school and college, Don playedcornet in the marching band and retained a great love of music throughout his life. He was a lifelong learner and an avid reader. Mr. Chapman was a student of Southwestern history.
About three years ago he was hospitalized for several months and during that time had a near death-experience that changed his life. Every Sunday morning he taped several church services, and particularly enjoyed the teachings of Andrew Womack. He viewed every new day as a great blessing from God.
