Don Chapman, 69, was born Feburary 2, 1939, in Portales to Zell and Allen Chapman and died July 7, 2008, in Lubbock, TX.� His earliest years were lived in the Causey community.� At the age of 9, he and his family moved to the Dora area where he attended school from the 6th grade, and graduated from Dora High School in 1956.� He went on to attend two years at Eastern New Mexico University before transferring to New Mexico State University where he studied another three years in Electrical Engineering.�
On June 7, 1959, in Grady, NM, he was married to Elaine Lovvorn.� The couple later divorced.� His first job was with Martin-Marietta, an aerospace company in Denver.� In 1965, he moved his family to Hereford, TX. where he was employed as an engineer for Holly Sugar Co.� In January 1977, the family moved to LaVeta, CO., where he went into business for himself manufacturing candles and pinecone fireplace starters among other items.� He eventually became involved in numerous business ventures, including marketing baskets of Colorado grown foods, and a fishing lake where you were guaranteed to catch two fish, which were then cleaned and cooked for you to enjoy a fresh caught meal.� He owned land on which cattle were pastured, as well as other land where you could pay to hunt.�
Shortly after the death of his father in 1996, Don relocated to Portales to help his mother run the family farms.� He was at his mother's home twice daily?once to open the mail and another time to check on her and usually play dominoes.� Since Mr. Chapman moved to Portales, he had been deeply involved in the local Little League program, and was known as their #1 supporter.� He was an avid Denver Broncos fan and loved sports of all kinds.� He was a regular at�Portales Rams games as well as university sporting events.� He loved traveling, and had hoped to go to England one day.� He also had plans to attend the International Little League Tournament in Pennsylvania later this summer.� Don was a people person, and would help anyone he could in whatever way he had available.� In both high school and college, Don played�cornet in the marching band and retained a great love of music throughout his life.� He was a lifelong learner and an avid reader.� Mr. Chapman was a student of Southwestern history.�
About three years ago he was hospitalized for several months and during that time had a near death-experience that changed his life.� Every Sunday morning he taped several church services, and particularly enjoyed the teachings of Andrew Womack.� He viewed every new day as a great blessing from God.
He is survived by his two daughters and sons-in-law, Julie and Kevin Walker of Monument, CO. and Sharon and Noel Riddle of Longmont, CO.; five grandchildren, Adrienne and Jared Walker and McKenna, Donovan and Landry Riddle; his mother, Zell Chapman-Taylor and husband, G. L. of Portales; his sister, Darlene Dickson and husband, Larry of Las Cruces, NM; a niece, D'Lyn Ford of Portales; a nephew Aaron Dickson and wife, Danielle of Fayetteville, NC; a great-niece, Danielle Givens of Portales; and his godson, James Chapman "Jimmy" Reeves of Flagstaff, AZ.�
He was preceded in death by his father, Allen Chapman on March�31, 1996.
