Joseph "Joe" Houston Mayrhofen, 82, a lifelong resident of Altus, passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2008, with his family at his side.

Joe was born in Altus on Jan. 1, 1926, to Theodore "Bud" and Gennie (Choate) Mayrhofen. On Oct. 4, 1947, he married Betty Jo Burgett in Vernon, Texas, and they were married for more than 57 years before she passed away in 2004. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1944 to 1946 and was in the 85th Regiment 10th Mountain Division and received a Purple Heart after being injured in Northern Italy.

Joe worked for Steffans Dairy from 1946 to 1956 then he went on to work for the civil service from 1956 to 1976. After retiring from civil service, he worked at the Altus Cotton Compress from 1976 to 1992 and retired in 1992. He was a member of the Altus DAV and was known by many people in Altus as a morning coffee drinker at McDonald's.

When his health started to fail, Joe moved to Headrick to live with his daughter and son-in-law. Joe was a great man that cared about his family and many other people and he will be missed very much.
