Born to Ransom Herrin and Mary Ann Anderson Jordan Herrin Oct. 12, 1855 in Ill. (note: Records of Caldwell County, Texas.)
The earliest record of James Monroe in Texas is the Texas Ranger record showing his enlistment in Company F, Minute Men of Gillespie Co., 1874, he was about 18.
One Texas Ranger muster roll dated March 4, 1874, shows that he was stationed at Spring Creek near Fredericksburg.
On February 28, 1879, James Monroe married Rebecca Jane McDonald in Gillespie Co. This union conceived 15 children, James Marion,Hattie, Albert, Earl, Rosie, Josephine, Archie Allen, Lee, Bessie Miranda, Birdie Ann, William Allen.,Lonie Belle, Mahalia,and Ruthie Mirtle.
The 1880 Census show occupation as farmer, although one source states that he also delivered the mail on horseback in the Fredericksburg area.
In 1893, the family moved to Travis Co. They lived in the Oak Hill area where James Monroe farmed.Several of his children and their families lived nearby. The 1920 census show them living at 80 Red River Street. They eventually moved to McCulloch Co. where James Monroe died.

March 15, 2005 a ceremony was held to dedicate a Texas Ranger Cross in honor James Monroe Herrin. Great-grandson, Wayne Herrin, and his wife Wyona in cooperation of the Texas Rangers, provided the opportunity for about 80 descendants to express their admiration for this Texas hero.
