She was a daughter of Thomas Sharp and Margaret Elder. She was born in the Campbeltown parish on the Kintyre peninsula of western Scotland (baptized there January 7, 1750 per the Julian calendar in effect at the time -- January 18, 1750 per the Gregorian calendar that took effect in 1752 for England/Scotland). Her siblings included John, Robert, Mary Ann, Andrew, James, Alexander, Martha and Jane. The family moved from Scotland to the Belfast area of County Antrim/Derry in the Ulster Province of Ireland (now Northern Ireland), before emigrating to Philadelphia PA. They initially settled north of Philadelphia "in the forks of the Delaware River" (where the Delaware and Lehigh rivers meet in current Easton PA). Later, most of the family moved again to the Newville area of Cumberland Co PA.

Before 1770, she was married to Moses Hemphill. In 1781 and 1790, they lived of a farm in Allen Township of Northampton Co, PA. In 1800 and 1810, they were farming in nearby Hanover Township of Northampton Co, PA. Their children were James, Joseph, Thomas, Mary, Margaret 1 who died as a child, Nancy, Jane, Elizabeth and Margaret 2.
