Whitten was the flight engineer on B-24J, #44-40588,assigned to the 10th Air Force, 7th Bombardment Group,493rd Bombardment Squadron. They were part of a 5 plane formation that departed Pandaveswar, India to bomb targets at Moulmein, Burma. Five minutes after dropping their bombs, the formation was jumped by eight to twelve Japanese fighters. On about the third or fourth pass; the bombers # 2 engine caught fire. The pilot shut down the engine, the fire went out and they made a diving left turn into the clouds. They were not seen again.
Whitten received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.
He is also memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing in the Manila American Cemetery in the Phillipines.
