A picture of the first grade of the West School was exhibited by Tom Kite. The photo was taken about 1881 and was the first group picture ever taken at that school.
At the time of the picture it was practically a new building. The teacher was Miss Clara Virginia Townsend, who was then embarking upon the teaching profession which subsequently led her to Kansas City where she taught for many years.
Miss Townsend started a well known column under the name "Percival Prim" in the Kansas City Star Newspaper.

Clara Virginia Townsend, 81, of Fulton, died at 9:30am on July 8, 1939 at the Callaway County Hospital.
Dr. R.N. Crews, of Fulton, pronounced death caused by Arteriosclerosis and Gangrene of the foot contributed to by excessive heat. An amputation was preformed on July 1, 1939. The informant was Virginia Rouse of Fulton.
Miss Townsend was born September 28, 1857, in Fulton, the daughter of Eli and Margaret (Kelley) Townsend. She was never married. Miss Townsend was a teacher for over fifty years.
Arrangements were under the care of Leo G. Wallace of Fulton. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery.
