He was born Jan. 26, 1894, to John and Betsy (Hagen) Baken at Hayfield, Minn. He moved with his family in 1902 to Lacrosse, Wash., where he was raised and attended school.
Mr. Baken served in the U.S. Army Infantry during World War I.
He married Bessie Lola Michel on Jan. 31, 1921, at Spokane. They moved to Wenatchee in 1924, and then to Cashmere, where Mr. Baken worked for Pacific Fruit.
Mr. Baken served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed at various camps throughout the United States and spent two years in the Philippines. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1954. When he was 75, he took up real estate in Tacoma before returning to Wenatchee in 1980.
Mr. Baken was an active member of Wenatchee First Baptist Church. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 64, Cashmere.
Survivors include his son, Palmer Baken Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Betty Graybill of East Wenatchee; a brother, George of Yakima; two sisters, Frances Byrne of Renton and Clara Offer of Olympia; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife on Aug. 24, 1984, a brother, four sisters and a great-grandson.
