The Norman Transcript

Funeral service for Willis E. Hinson, 88, former Fletcher resident, will be 2 p.m. Thursday in the Fletcher Christian Church with Jim Hall, minister, officiating. Mr. Hinson died Sunday in Norman. Burial will be in the Fletcher Cemetery under the direction of Becker Funeral Home of Fletcher (formerly Robbins Funeral Home).

Mr. Hinson was born Aug. 4, 1919, in Fletcher to Elmo and Emma Vogel Hinson. He grew up in Fletcher where he graduated high school. He continued his education at Oklahoma A--M, leaving school to start his own business, owning H--S Gas Company until the late 1960s. He married Irene McGaugh Aug. 24, 1940 in Fletcher. She preceded him in death Aug. 31, 2006. He worked as a machinist making precision parts at an aircraft factory in California before World War II. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy June 22, 1944, and was discharged Jan. 25, 1946. He was a veteran of World War II and fought in the battle of Okinawa.
Mr. Hinson began building racecars when he was about 28 years old and drove them at the racetracks in Lawton and Anadarko. He quit driving racecars in 1967 when he sold his business. He and his wife moved to Norman in 1969. He was a salesman for Sales Equipment Company until his retirement. He drove a route throughout Texas and Oklahoma. He was a member of the Fletcher Christian Church and attended University Christian Church in Norman.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Dee Ann and Joe Carpenter and Rhonda and John Trent, all of Norman; four grandchildren and their spouses, Steve and Becky Carpenter, Shari and Butch Wilson, Mike and Rayanne Carpenter and Jason and Kelli Trent; nine great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Chardee, Tyler, Christy, Kyndal, David, Lacie, Jeanie and Zackary; several nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Nadine Robinson, Lawton.
His parents and a brother, Ivan Hinson, preceded him in death.
