The Sandersville Herald, 10 Jun 1897:
MR. WILLIAM MARTIN
On Friday morning at 4 o'clock, Mr. Wm. Martin died at his home in this city. The declining state of his health for some times past, and his recent severe illness gave but little hope of his recovery. Mr. Martin strongly impressed himself upon all as a man of great energy and force of character and of stirring integrity. The following events of his life will be of interest to his many friends.
William Martin was born in Marion County, Ga. June 22, 1834 and died in Sandersville, Washington County, Ga., June 4, 1897. He was nearly 63 years old.
When an infant, his father, John Spencer Martin, having been accidentally killed at a log-rolling, his mother returned to her native county, Warren, now Glascock.
In 1861, at the call of his country, he shouldered his rifle and went to the front, and there was no Southern soldier more brave or more gallant than he.
In 1862, having been severely wounded in the Seven Days fight around Richmond, he was sent home. Having recovered sufficiently, he was elected in 1863 Tax Receiver of Glascock County.
Dec. 4, 1864, he was happily married to Miss Julia A. Walden of Grange, Jefferson county and who after 33 years of wedded life now survives him. In January 1865, he again went to the front where he served until the close of the war.
In 1871 he moved to the Happ place within three miles of Sandersville where he successfully farmed for nine years. He then removed to Sandersville to give his children the advantage of an education. He has consequently been a citizen of Sandersville for sixteen years, honored and respected by every one.
He was one of the most energetic and progressive farmers in Georgia and always made farming pay. No man's opinion in regard to farm work was more highly thought of than his, and his advice was often followed by our best farmers.
He was a large land-holder and had accumulated much property by his industry and economy.
Ten children had been born to him, eight girls and two boys, four of whom died in their infancy.
His six surviving children are as follows: Mrs. Eliza Jane M. Cason of Mayfield, Ga.; Mrs. Roberta Catherine M. Harris, Sandersville; Miss Mary Elizabeth Martin, Sandersville; Mrs. Ella Mizell M. Stanley, Dublin, Ga.; Mrs. Claudia B. M. McLaughlin, Crawfordville, Ga.; and Miss Addie Lee Martin, Sandersville.
His sister, Mrs. Mary Martin Braddy, lives at Gibson, Ga., and was present at his death. They were the only children of their father and mother.
Thus lived and died Mr. Wm. Martin, a staunch citizen and an upright man!
The burial occurred at the city cemetery Friday evening at 5 o'clock.
