Daughter of John and Adelphia (White) Markward of Lampasas, TX. Born in Lampasas, TX where she received her early education, and later trained as a concert pianist in Austin and Ft. Worth. On 6/22/1910 in Lampasas she married attorney John Edward Hickman of Liberty Hill, Williamson Cty., TX, who was then principal and football coach at Lampasas High School. He went on to become a law school graduate from UT and they moved from Lampasas to Dublin, Erath Cty., TX where he practiced law. Ethel was a gifted vocalist and pianist who died in Dublin, TX from a sudden illness, leaving no children.

John went on to become Chief Justice of the TX Supreme Court 1940-1961 and remarried.
