George was the son of Milby and Henrietta (Retty) Campbell Bunting. He married Louisa I. Carey on 1 September 1865 in Georgetown, Sussex, Delaware by Rev. John Thomas Reed. They were the parents of Fayetta Bunting Short Barker and Evalene Bunting Onley. Their son George Campbell Bunting was born 28 October 1883 and died 3 January 1886.

George was a private in the Union Army during Civil War, Company C, 9th Regiment Delaware Infantry and served from 3 September 1864 to 23 January 1865. He was kicked by his horse and received early release due to the injury.
