Being then single he drifted about over the State until May 15, 1858, and at the opening of the war, he enlisted in the Confederate army as a member of Scantlan's squadron, and served in North Texas, Arkansas and the Indian Territory. Toward the close of the war he obtained a detail and was engaged in hauling supplies to the soldiers of the Indian Territory and Arkansas.
