Charles Hett, called "Fred", son of August Hett and Mary Nutter Hett, moved to Wausau WI from NH by the age of four. He spent his early years there. Around 1875, at the age of 19, he made the long journey to Oregon where his father set up a sawmill.

After his father died in an accident, he became the provider for his mother, a sister, and three younger brothers.

On 6 Apr 1879, he married Georgia Baker. He and his wife had two daughters, Daisy and Florence.

He lived to the age of 51.
