Obituary: Josiah Whitaker McDonald, son of Alex. McDonald and wife, was born Sept. 12, 1850, and departed this life Feb. 12 at the age of 80 years and 5 months. He was reared near West Mansfield and lived all his days in or near that village.

He was less than 15 years of age when the Civil War closed, but he had the satisfaction of doing a man's part on the farm, as most of the men had gone to war. He was a tenor singer in youth and a lover of music. In later days he still loved to sing the old hymns around the home.

He married Hester Ann Skidmore on Sep 12, 1874 in Union County, Ohio. To them were born four children : Pearl, of West Mansfield, Mrs. Lena Porter, of Kent, OH, Dana S of Alliance, Neb., and Chester A of California. His wife and son Chester preceded him in death ; Chester passed away last October in Oceanside, CA.

Mr. McDonald was for the most part a farmer, having a real part in the upbuilding of a neighborhood and State during one of the greatest epochs of history. He had lived through the period from days of tallow candles and rail splitting to days of electric lights and radio. He had a quiet love for the church, possibly more than he openly showed, and had a real reverence for God that often impressed those nearest him. He had retained in his nature and manner and tastes a bit of the heritage of Old World royalty and grace.

As a husband and father having loved his own, he loved them until the end, faithfully caring for them. He new what sacrifice was for his own. He ever made a chief object the promotion of the interests of his children. He loved all around him. The grandchildren and least great-grandchild were as near to him as his first-born.

As a citizen, ever standing for law and order, he had a quiet interest in political and national affairs. As a man in the community he was especially kindly to the sick and to those where death had come into the home.

There are left to mourn his passing and respect his memory the three living children, the son-in-law and 3 daughters-law, three sisters, 17 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and other friends and relatives. Peace to his memory.

(Addendum:He changed his family name from McDonald to MacDonald because he wanted to make it clear that his ancestors were from Scotland, and not Ireland.)
