DEATH CALLS MRS. O. P. ROWEN THIS MORNING
DeMotte Lady, who Was Born and Reared in Rensselaer, Passes Away at Michigan City Hospital
Mrs. Orval P. Rowen of DeMotte, a lovely girl whose pre-marriage background was that of Rensselaer, where she was born, reared and educated, passed away at St. Anthony Hospital in Michigan City at 6:45 o'clock this morning.
The death of the well known and much esteemed lady culminated ill health that began many months ago and was the result of complications that twice hospitalized her. She re-entered the hospital in February and was placed under the care of a specialist, but her condition became progressively worse and she weakened gradually under the strain of the combined complications. Her condition assumed a much more serious aspect last week and since that time it became apparent that she could not long survive. Early last evening she began to fail rapidly and her life swiftly ebbed away.
Mrs. Rowen was a daughter of Leslie Clark, retired Rensselaer Publisher, and sister of Howard B. Clark, editor of the Republican.
BORN HERE IN 1903
Mrs. Rowen, nee Ada Ruth Clark, was born in Rensselaer July 26, 1903, a daughter of Leslie Clark and Almira (Shriver) Clark. It was here that she was reared and educated. As a member of the 1921 Rensselaer High School graduating class, she was class salutatorian.
On Nov. 24, 1921, she was united in marriage with Orval P. Rowen, son of Charles A. Rowen of this city, the ceremony taking place on a Thanksgiving day at the home of the bride's parents. During their early married years they were residents of Rensselaer, later of Medaryville and after that they lived in Fort Wayne, Indianapolis and Cincinnati, during which years Mr. Rowen was a representative of bakery corporations. It was in 1936 that the family returned to this area and Mr. Rowen established "Ruth's Bakery" in DeMotte. Since that time DeMotte has been the family's place of residence.
Left to mourn their loss are the husband, four children, William L. Rowen of Valparaiso, Mrs. Arthur Schoonveld of Holland, Michigan, Mrs. Jack Easley of Spring Valley, Illinois and James Rowen of DeMotte; her father, now in his 84th year, two brothers, Harold L. Clark and Howard B. Clark, both of Rensselaer, four grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a wide circle of friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother who passed away in this city Sept. 6, 1949, and a son, Howard Paul, who passed away in 1938 at the age of 11.
During her girlhood and early adult life Mrs. Rowen made many lasting friendships in Rensselaer and nearby areas which she kept fresh though the years. After leaving here she kept those girlhood contacts through frequent visit here. And in DeMotte where she was later to make her home she formed many more enduring friendships through her daily contacts and participation in community activities. So many here recall and remember her as an attractive lady whose sparkling personality, sweetness and comforting ways blessed all. Self-sacrificing, thoughtful of others always, generous, patient, understanding and representing the highest ideals of motherhood she was one whose character sub-consciously drew admiration. Her passing at a comparatively early age brings much sadness to her native community and those other communities where she made her home.
Mrs. Rowen early in life affiliated with Rensselaer Methodist church. She was a member of Eastern Star and community organizations whose activities are devoted to making happier life.
SERVICES SATURDAY
The funeral rites will be held from DeMotte Methodist church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon with the church pastor, the Rev. Delbert Smith officiating. Interment will be at Weston cemetery in Rensselaer, Friends may call at Todd's Funeral Home in DeMotte after noon Thursday.
