John was a son of Byrd Joseph Deatherage Jr and Lucinda Allen Pollard. According to the History of Baxter County, the family came to north Arkansas in 1855 (John Greer's obituary says 1829, which is more likely), and settled in Johnson County. They later moved to Baxter county and settled near present day Gassville.

During the unrest preceding the Civil War, they moved to Missouri, where two of the sons joined the Union army. After the war, they moved back to Arkansas, eventually moving to the area of Three Brothers.

John Deatherage built the first schoolhouse at Three Brothers and was well known all over north Arkansas.
